PRESS RELEASE: Seniors Job Bank Wins West Hartford Chamber of Commerce Legacy Award

The Seniors Job Bank is a local, no-cost service for people over 50 looking for part-time, full-time, and temporary work to connect with businesses, municipalities, homeowners and other employers who value their experience.

With over 850 jobseekers in our registry, SJB enables companies, professional practices, and government agencies to hire experienced staff offering an extensive range of skills and talents, blue – and white collar.

Households and other domestic clients turn to SJB to complete home maintenance and improvements, and to arrange for a variety of personal services. SJB contributes to the financial and social well-being of its jobseekers as well as to the general economic health of the Greater Hartford region.

The Seniors Job Bank is the first nonprofit organization to be awarded West Hartford Chamber of Commerce’s Legacy Award that recognizes organizations that have served the West Hartford community for over 25 years.

The Seniors Job Bank stands as a testament to the resilience and adaptability of community initiatives. Established in 1974 during a time of economic uncertainty, the SJB has evolved to meet the changing needs of its constituents in West Hartford and beyond. The Seniors Job Bank (SJB) serves 36 cities and towns in the Greater Hartford area.

From its humble beginnings assisting older individuals in finding supplemental work with homeowners who needed help, to its current expanded role in connecting mature workers with employers across various business sectors, the SJB has truly made its mark on the community.

In 2023, Hartford County homeowners and business employers posted 494 jobs with the SJB. In 2024, the projection is to fill 532 jobs. Some SJB jobseekers have even started their own businesses stemming from relationships with employers who have repeatedly hired them.

SJB President, Lester Primus explains, “In 2024, the Seniors Job Bank plans to expand its scope to encompass volunteer opportunities with the Greater Hartford region. SJB’s intention is to establish an online database of volunteer opportunities to add to our existing paid opportunities, providing additional avenues for our mature workers to contribute to our community.”
