Owen Egan, the West Hartford Probate Judge, introduces a new four-part series on understanding probate. Part One features all the things you need to know about the process.

Introduction of Guest Speakers (00.14.55 - 00.17.21): Owen introduces the panelists: Maryanne Sharon, Donald Neville, and Kelly Ambrosio, highlighting their qualifications and areas of expertise in probate law.

Kelly Ambrosio's Presentation (00.17.38 - 00.33.28): Kelly discusses what happens to a person's assets when they pass away, emphasizing the importance of having a will and clarifying misconceptions about the distribution of assets. Donald Neville's presentation begins at 00.46.50. Donald discusses the role of the executor or administrator in the probate process. He emphasizes the importance of the responsibilities entrusted to these individuals, explaining that they must act in the best interest of the estate and represent the interests of the beneficiaries. He outlines key duties such as identifying and managing the estate's assets, ensuring that all funeral expenses and debts are handled appropriately, and maintaining meticulous records of all transactions.

Donald explains that after being appointed, the executor is required to file an inventory of the estate within 60 days, detailing the value of the assets at the time of the decedent's death. He also discusses the necessity of filing a list of claims for any debts owed by the decedent, which must be submitted within 150 days of appointment. Finally, he mentions the importance of filing a final accounting to provide a complete overview of the estate's financial activities, which allows beneficiaries to review and possibly contest the administration process. Throughout, he stresses the legal obligations executors have to the court and the need for transparency with beneficiaries to prevent disputes.

Closing Remarks: The video provides insights into the intricacies of probate law and emphasizes the importance of proper estate planning to avoid conflicts among heirs and ensure a smoother distribution of assets after death.

"Everyone's Grandmother": Stories of the People Who Shaped Us

Join us in celebrating the life and legacy of Gertrude Blanks through reminiscences and stories. Gertrude has been described by those who ...knew her as a "Hartford legend," "Mama Blanks," and "everyone's grandmother." She dedicated her life to serving the community, connecting with young people, and education through storytelling. To honor her, our speakers will share stories of people who, like Gertrude, support, nurture, and bring comfort to those around them. The program will be followed by light refreshments and conversation.

This annual celebration of storytelling and community is co-hosted by West Hartford Public Library and the Office of Employee Development & Community Engagement.

About Gertrude Blanks

Gertrude Blanks (1920-2019) was born in Baltimore, Maryland and moved to Hartford, Connecticut as a young child in the early 1920s. She later lived in West Hartford and attended Hall High School.

Storytelling became her special time with her mother and a way to feel connected to her people and her history. She developed her gift of storytelling and worked at the Hartford Public Library for more than 20 years facilitating story times and continuing that tradition with many schools and organizations seeking her services until her late years of life. She was an inspiration for the many poets and storytellers that followed her legacy.

An exhibit about Gertrude’s life and accomplishments will be on display in the Meeting Room of Noah Webster Library from March 13-20 and can be visited when the library is open.
